Immigrant Gifts to America Exhibit

“Immigrant Gifts” is a month-long celebration featuring art exhibitions, a film series (Thursdays, May 12, 19 & 26 at 7pm), storytelling presentation (Sunday, May 29, 3:00 - 5:00 pm) and a workshop on “migratory mourning” (Sunday, May 22, 1:00 - 4:00 pm)

The project has been organized by three collaborating community organizations: the Arts Society of Kingston (ASK), which is hosting the presentations; the James Cox Gallery, which represents the featured immigrant artist Joseph Garlock (1884-1980), whose colorful and individualistic work was discovered in 2000 by his children in a shed near Woodstock; and the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History, the event’s organizer.

The Reher Center is restoring a historic bakery next to ASK to house a community archive and be a center for all immigrant groups that have shaped, and continue to contribute to, Kingston’s Rondout neighborhood and the region’s evolving identity.
